“They’re coming for you…”

If you missed Rachel Maddow’s coverage of l’affaire Sherrod last night, do yourself a favor and watch all three segments. Or at least see this clip:

Maddow puts the Breitbart-Fox News smear job in its proper context, linking it to past efforts to stoke racial resentment and fear, from George Wallace in the 60s to Jesse Helms in the 90s to Rush Limbaugh today. This story isn’t just about a particular race-baiter (Breitbart) trying to deflect attention from teabagger racism by twisting a dedicated public servant’s words.

It’s a long-range political strategy to frighten working class whites, a cynical maneuver to ensure that the poor and working classes remain divided by color so they don’t unite and, god forbid, demand a fair shake. Ironically, that’s the lesson Ms. Sherrod was delivering in the speech that was subsequently sliced and diced to serve Breitbart’s race-baiting purposes.

Although we lefties are often accused of disbelieving in American exceptionalism by people who confuse nationalism with patriotism (cough**Sarah Palin**cough), one of the things this lefty is most proud of us for is that we attempt to “rise up and live out the true meaning of [our] creed—that all men (and women) are created equal”—as a national mission statement. We do it haltingly. We do it too slowly. We do it at great cost in blood and sorrow. We do it incompletely. We do it despite Bull Connor, Axe Handle Maddox, David Duke, Rush Limbaugh and Andrew Breitbart. But we do it or die trying.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but has another majority white, Western country aside from the US ever elected a racial minority as president or prime minister? Ever? In the history of this benighted planet? That’s kind of exceptional.

And that’s why these attempts to manipulate voters with race-baiting are not only infuriating and morally bankrupt but fundamentally un-American. Maddow rightly concludes the race-baiting strategy will be with us as long as it works. So how do we diminish its effectiveness as a political tool?

The Obama administration desperately wants to avoid race issues, and that impulse is perfectly understandable given the explosive potential of the topic. But it was their zeal to avoid controversy and to be seen as even-handed that led to the massive cock-up this week.

The only person who came out of this debacle with her dignity intact, Ms. Sherrod, said today she would like to share her insights with the president:

As for an apology with the president, Sherrod told the TODAY show that she did not expect an apology from him — but that she would like to have a conversation with him.

“I’d like to talk about the experiences of people like me, at the grassroots level,” she said. “Let me help him a little bit.”

I hope President Obama takes her up on it. If anyone can offer constructive suggestions on how we move past this mess, it’s Ms. Sherrod. It’s a road she’s traveled.

I didn’t watch it last night and probably won’t be able to check these out until later, but I hope Rachel brought up Lee Atwater.

I don’t recall if she mentioned Atwater by name, but she did talk about the Southern Strategy and the whole sorry history. It was a pretty remarkable piece of reporting, in my opinion.

Also, don’t miss the clip where she takes Fox News apart. Steve Douchey in particular comes out looking like the absurd shill he is, and Rachel refers to him as “the blonde,” which cracked me up.

Steve Douchey in particular comes out looking like the absurd shill he is

Douchey often reminds me of the Steve Carrell character from ‘Anchorman’ who says this:

Years later, a doctor will tell me that I have an I.Q. of 48 and am what some people call mentally retarded.

Trying to scare White voters with the Rev. Wright, Louis Farrakhan and “Barack the Magic Negro” didn’t work so well in 2008. But with high unemployment and the prospect of close elections in 2010, Conservatives are hoping they can run on a retooled message of Affirmative Action Has Enabled Black Panthers, ACORN and the NAACP to Take Over Your Life, Nullify Your Vote, Steal Your Job and Confiscate Your Income to Pay for Abortions, Billy Clubs, Perpetual Unemployment Benefits and Mosques at Ground Zero.

In short—at the same time they’re denouncing Obama’s “failed” administration, they’re absolutely terrified by just how effective its been at rolling over GOP opposition when it mattered, and very aware that only the Looming Specter of Black Panther Payback Time can make paranoid, throwback Tea Party candidates seem even remotely “normal.”

In lighter news, Shirley Sherrod thinks ruining race-baiting mudslinger Andrew Breitbart might be a good thing.

Do it, Ms. Sherrod. I hope someone advises her to start a legal fund. I would contribute.

Republicans are all about winning the news cycle.

Breitbart has made no bones about that being his aim—to subvert the Liberal MSM’s Narrative™.

Which reminds me of this rhyme by Humbert Wolfe:

You cannot hope to bribe or twist,
thank God! the British journalist.
But, seeing what the man will do
unbribed, there’s no occasion to.

I think race crops up so regularly because that plays well to their base and they don’t have a whole lot else that’s uncomplicated in their eyes, reliably sensational, and as a bonus, guaranteed to get lefty knickers in a twist and set off the circular firing squads.

If it wasn’t race, it would probably be some other issue. But because it’s the prime hotbutton, it’s the default.

Perhaps those of liberal leanings ought to highlight the great things we’ve seen in the City of Colorado Springs, an ultra-right-wing bunch of loonies.  Now they are experiencing:

1/3 of streetlights turned off,
trash cans removed from parks,
police and fire services reduced,
rec centers, pools and museums closed.

And that’s why these attempts to manipulate voters with race-baiting are not only infuriating and morally bankrupt but fundamentally un-American.

And in this day and age requires a finesse these clowns just don’t have. The result, they repulse people either through being too obvious or not obvious enough.

The result, they repulse people either through being too obvious or not obvious enough.

I hope that’s true, but from Breitbart’s short-termist point of view, what hasn’t been covered by the media for the last few days while this debacle’s played out?

And the reliable useful idiots trumpet it as yet more evidence of Obama’s weakness or worse, yadayada.

Every fucking time.

Do it, Ms. Sherrod. I hope someone advises her to start a legal fund. I would contribute.

Joan Walsh has offered as well.

If Vilsack doesn’t hire Sherrod back, I will personally contribute to her legal fund.

And this is choice. Palin twats:

Nice sources you got there, Sarah and Mark. Why don’t you go dig up McCarthy while you’re at it?

ABC enables Andy Dickhead, even though he admits that he doesn’t, you know, follow-up on his own stories to see if he was, you know, reporting bullshit.

Also, he apparently had a stranger upbringing than Barack Obama, which seems to explain his deep-seated need to seek out conflicted mentors and turn everything he touches into processed cheese.

Obama should have a black power ice cream summit with Sherrod.  It’s time for some sweet creamy justice, Barry O. style.

I’m sure he’ll get to it.  The silly season doesn’t even officially start for another 9 days.  It’s gonna be a rough one.  (Let’s hope it’ll only be on the teevee and not in the streets; record high temperatures and unemployment plus racial tension tends to lead to nasty things.)
