We’re toast

Stick a fork in us, fellow Obots—we’re done:

At least, that’s what I thought when I read the above headline at the Raw Story. “Oh no!” I thought: If Wrongy McWrongerson has conceded the race to Obama, surely the Republican nominee—even if it’s someone as dumb as Rick Perry, as crazy as Michele Bachmann, as kooky as Ron Paul, as discredited as Newt Gingrich, as priggish as Rick Santorum, as lecherous as Herman Cain, etc.—will emerge victorious in the general election.

But the Raw Story headline is misleading: If you read the Kristol piece, he doesn’t concede the race at all. Rather, he metaphorically exhumes and humps the corpse of national debt-tripler and serial tax-raiser Ronald Reagan and laments that we shall not see the Gipper’s bonny like again. Then he speculates that a lesser GOP mortal might employ the lessons of Bill Clinton or FDR to achieve a less-than-Reaganesque victory. Ho hum.

Whew, you had me going there for a minute.  Bloody Bill is always, forever and ever, wrong so thank dog the article didn’t match it’s headline!

The way the Rethuglicans idolize Saint Ronny never ceases to amaze me.  One of the things I remember most vividly about his administration were all the scandals and the amazing number of administration officials who were convicted of crimes!

But Saint Ronny was coated with teflon and none of it really seemed to stick to him.  I always thought that either the Alzheimer’s started a lot earlier than everyone thought and he was just being used by his staff or else he was just as corrupt as they were but being an actor was able to play the saint model and get away with it.

Not only does he hump the sainted corpse of Ronnie—Kristol likens the morning after the Nov. 1980 election to the moment that Faulkner immortalizes on the eve of Gettysburg, when victory still seemed within the Confederate grasp.

After which, of course, it all went pear-shaped for the boys in grey.

So is he saying that even Ronnie’s 8 years in office couldn’t live up to conservative fantasies of power?  That the right harkens back to the start of the Reagan regime the way Lost-Cause Southerners yearn for the moment before Pickett’s Charge, even though the GOP won?

Boy, that’s some exercise in nostalgia.

Reagan’s administration, which was predicated on the premise that the government is the problem not the solution was, not surprisingly populated by a host of criminals.  James Watt, Anne “Dragon Lady” Gorsuch (EPA), Donovan the Labor Secretary, a whole long list of Iran Contra officials, a whole long list of S&L related officials.  Dozens of Republican officials either went to jail or were fined.  Nowadays, nobody would go to jail because the Republican project is complete.
