Werner Herzog in the Jungle

This probably won’t do much for you unless you’re familiar with the work of director/documentarian Werner Herzog (I recently wrote about him here), but this is a spot-on impression of his dark ramblings in Les Blank’s documentary Burden of Dreams about the making of his disaster-prone film Fitzcarraldo (clip from Burden below the fold):

Well, Burden Of Dreams is one of my favorite films and Herzog’s nature monologue is something I’ve been impersonating for years. When Grizzly Man came out, I spent the time before seeing the film in anticipation of Herzog’s inevitable “horror of the bear” monologue.

Grizzly Man, incidentally, surprised me, as I’d spoken to several people who had seen it and described it to me in terms I wouldn’t have chosen in a hundred lifetimes.

The Herzog impersonation this guy does is great. Really made my morning.

Brad, I finally saw Encounters at the End of the World.  Great doc.  Did you see yet?

Yeah, Grizzly Man was a lot darker than I had been led to believe, but considering the subject matter and Herzog’s involvement, I guess I should have know better.

Obviously, I have to gift-wrap copies of My Best Fiend for both of you. There is darker darkness out there.

Then again, I haven’t seen Grizzly Man, so I probably don’t know shit about shit.

Strange -

My Best Fiend is incredible. Klaus Kinski’s portrayal of Jesus is, to borrow a phrase from Pauline Kael, not unlike a septic tank explosion - something one must see to believe.

Those two (Herzog and Kinski) truly deserved one other.

No, I haven’t yet seen Encounters At The End Of The World. I look forward to it, though.

funny impersonation.

but herzog has sort of become a self-parody now. even though i love him. i love him very much. despite my better judgment.
