What was Bill Clinton up to in Florida?

Interesting discussion over at BooMan’s joint about Bill Clinton’s attempts to persuade Democrat Kendrick Meek to bow out of the Florida senate race and endorse Republican-turned independent Charlie Crist.

Some speculate that Clinton got pissed when Meek backed out of the deal (if indeed one was ever struck) and leaked the story in a fit of pique. Could be.

I don’t think so, though. I think Clinton genuinely believes word of his attempt to swing the election to Crist (which is the top story down here) will be enough to persuade fence-sitters to vote for Crist and keep Rubio out.

Sometimes—even with Bill Clinton—a cigar is just a cigar.

I heard he suggested that Meek move to South Carolina if he really wanted to get elected.

I hate to see Meek treated like this, and he has been treated like shit since Crist made his bid, by both the White House and the Dem leadership, but I’m not buying the “if Meek were white…” firebagger baloney.

Agreed, Zandar. I think the Dem leadership and WH concluded pretty quickly there was no way Meek would win—not enough money, not enough name recognition outside of S FL, not a strong enough organization, etc., so decided to stand on the sidelines.

I don’t think it has anything to do with race or Meek’s support for Hillary Clinton in the primary, which is another conspiracy theory being bandied about by the usual suspects.

Crist could make this easier by announcing who he’d caucus with if elected,but I guess it’s too late for that.
