Who will counter the cankle of divisive assholes?

The attempt to establish a Muslimfrei zone around Ground Zero isn’t about 9/11. The wingnut solicitude for “Dr.” Laura’s supposedly lost First Amendment rights isn’t about “Dr.” Laura’s right to repeat racial slurs on the radio.

Fox News’ relentless pimping of the New Black Panther Party non-story isn’t about voter intimidation. Arizona’s anti-immigration law isn’t about illegal immigration. Breitbart’s Shirley Sherrod smear wasn’t about “reverse racism.”

The persistent suggestions from multiple quarters on the right that President Obama isn’t a Christian or an American aren’t about his religion or nationality. And the Prop 8 campaign wasn’t about protecting straight marriage.

What this is all really about is the most orchestrated, widespread attempt to divide this country since George Wallace’s presidential run. Scratch that—Wallace was never more than a regional candidate. This may be unprecedented in living memory.

Will Bunch posted an excellent piece yesterday summarizing the broad effort currently underway to rip this country apart in the name of taking it back. An excerpt:

America, we are in for the bumpy political ride of a lifetime. It will take enormous courage for defenders of two centuries of religious freedom and tolerance toward both religious and economic refugees to stand firm in the face of the kind of raw public anger and emotion that have caused backbone-impaired politicians like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid or supposed progressive stalwart Howard Dean to wither in mere days.

Let’s face it: This country has long had its Know-Nothings and its Birchers and its McCarthyites, but it never had gizmos like Fox News or Sarah Palin’s Twitter feed to fuel toxic ideas so far so fast. It’s time we admit these seemingly disconnected battles over “anchor babies, mosques, and a black man in the Oval Office are all part of the same war against “the Other,” and that we are in the fight of a lifetime.

Bunch has that right. The presence of racists, homophobes, nativists and religious bigots is nothing new. But the spectacle of nutcases like Pam Geller being ventriloquized by top Republicans like Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich is.

This isn’t a fight any progressive worthy of the name can afford to sit out. Even if Obama hurt their feelings once upon a time.

I really hate just saying “this,” but—THIS.

But… But… My fee fees! My noble ideals! My vote, more precious than gold, reserved like virginity for the one True King!!

I agree with you totally.  It needs to be said.
The Brits are making fun of you guys by the way.

Meanwhile President Obama has caused unease within his own Democratic party by endorsing the library and claiming that not everyone who reads books is responsible for calling Mrs Palin a fuckwit nutjob nightmare of a human being.

Go read the whole thing, it will cheer you up to no end.

Like herpes, they’re always there but sometimes they bubble up to the surface and create a nasty sore.

If you think it’s bad right now, Ramadan (a religious observance whose dates are set according to the phases of the moon, just like Easter) will end this year on September 10 in the US, and is followed by the celebration of Eid, which customarily lasts three days or so.

Oh, and add Palin’s childish response to Emily’s list as “a cackle of rads” and her claim about the “hijacking” of feminism as a sideshow display of the divisiveness you describe.

Love it, Litlebrit. Thanks.

If ignorance is bliss, 18% of our population lives in a constant state of orgasm. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s a piss-poor way to govern.

I hadn’t realized that about Ramadan’s timing, YAFB. Hoo boy.

Regarding the absurd, divisive Palin’s ridiculous pronouncements on the “cackle of rads,” as with most of her utterances, it’s a lie from start to finish. As if women—in droves!—oppose her solely on the reproductive rights issue!

Only the usual suspects will fall for such patent nonsense. I oppose her because she’s a dangerous demagogue who is spearheading an incredibly scary reactionary backlash in times that are perilous enough without the return of the John Birch Society.

I say again wide spread instant H8 is a good thing. It makes it very difficult for people to ignore it and forces them to decide what they think of it. Technology helped turn the Civil Rights debate by putting images of people being firehosed and bitten by dogs in everyone’s living room. To a smaller degree, the internons helped escort “Dr.” L off the airwaves because now the dumbass crap people say runs around the world in seconds, not hours.

As for screaming about 1st Am. rights, it’s a pity one side as so muddied the debate that more people think it is (or should be) legal to shut down a foul mouthed hag. Whoops, looks like that bed you’re making isn’t so comfy.

He added: “Our founding fathers intended for every building in this country to be a church containing one book, written by Jesus, that would be read out in a strange voice by an orange man in a shiny suit who would also tell you who you were allowed to kill.

That article is hysterical! Thanks for sharing.

And Wayne Hayes, a pig masseur from Coontree, Virginia, said: “I is so angry right now.

“It’s like something is on fire right in the middle of my head. Like I’ve eaten a real hot chilli, but it’s gone up my nose tubes rather than down my ass tubes.”

He added: “Would these library lovers allow me to set up a stall next to the Smithsonian Museum and start selling DVDs of bible cartoons as long as it was in accordance with local regulations?

“Oh they would? I see. So is that why they’re better than me?”

This made me laugh very hard. But only through my nose tubes. So far.

A pig masseur, huh, sounds like it’s time for a career change.

And it’s not just the RW’s who are being divisive assholes.  The “professional left” is doing everything they can to be divisive and confrontational too.  It’s almost as though they want to see a Republican takeover in the elections both so they can say “we told you so” and then really have a lot of targets to legitimately hate (and of course, blame it all on Obama).  What it does to the country is irrelevant - it’s all about them.

It’s almost as though they want to see a Republican takeover in the elections both so they can say “we told you so” and then really have a lot of targets to legitimately hate (and of course, blame it all on Obama).

This. An asshole is an asshole is an asshole, no matter what their political bent.

What really kills me about all the uproar over Gibbs’ comments (and Emanuel’s before that) is that it comes from the same people who accuse Obama of being “spineless” and “weak.”

Um, exsqueeze me? The assholes in the Butt-Hurt Fees-Fees Pillow-Biting brigade can’t stand a few insults (and really, I agree that unless your name is “Jane Hamsher” or “David Sirota,” Gibbs wasn’t talking about you—sorry to burst your ego-bubbles, kids) without taking to the fainting couches. But yeah, the guy who gets a constant barrage of death threats directed at him (and presumably his wife and kids and other family members), who hears all the time that he’s not a real citizen, he’s a socialist, he’s a shiftless affirmative action darkie who hates white America, who has to deal with the drama queens in his own party and the insane demagogues across the aisle—he’s the weak one in the room.,

This is why I no longer care if the capricious self-important Fee-Fee Wankers decide to sit home or not. Vote, don’t vote. Fuck off. Die. Go work for Nader or whatever other magical deity you think will make it all better for you. It’s not as if they’re capable of doing any heavy lifting (getting doors slammed in their faces, phones slammed in their ears, etc.) anyway.

I disagree.. If this is the fight of a lifetime (and I believe it is) then Gibbs, Rahm, Obama and others have to stop playing footsie with the bigots. And stop beating on people defending him and fighting for Enlightenment.

United we stand, divided we fall.

And stop beating on people defending him and fighting for Enlightenment.

And who would that be? Certainly not the Petulant Left.

If this is the fight of a lifetime (and I believe it is) then Gibbs, Rahm, Obama and others have to stop playing footsie with the bigots.

Or else what? you’ll take your vote and go home? I believe that was your strategy over at Cole’s joint.

And “playing footsie with the bigots” is your perception. Which is, you know, different from an established fact.

If you’re NOT one of the people who has been persistently screaming about how Obama is worse than Bush and he’s sold us out and he’s a corporate lackey and he’s spineless and he gets all his marching orders from Emanuel—then you’re fine. If you are—well, if you truly believe, as you say, that this is “the fight of a lifetime,” then your fee-fees don’t matter a whit and you should stop worrying about whether or not somebody in administration said something mean or not.

Stop whining, start working.

And if I have you confused with another Balloon Juice commentator who was ruminating about not voting, then my apologies. But honestly—anyone who considers him- or herself a “progressive” who would consider not voting in the midterms because they didn’t get enough kisses and flowers from the president’s men is a useless, spineless, narcissistic POS. I really, truly do NOT want such people on “my side,” because they are not trustworthy. We’ve learned that from Jane “Grover Norquist is my BFF Now Where’s My Facetime on Cable To Slag Obama For Not Being Progressive Enough” Hamsher.

But honestly—anyone who considers him- or herself a “progressive” who would consider not voting in the midterms because they didn’t get enough kisses and flowers from the president’s men is a useless, spineless, narcissistic POS.

Once upon a time, I had more patience with the politically disenchanted. That was before the opposing party’s losing VP candidate ordered America to “value the voice” of Phyllis Schlafly in Klan togs and joined the rest of the party in flipping off 1.5 billion of the planet’s inhabitants.

Bottom line: I’m not thrilled to pieces with everything the Democrats do. But the other fuckers are flat-out crazy and evil.

AGREED!!!  Anybody who threatens that they want to cut off their nose to spite their face needs to seriously grow up and realize that this country and the world can’t afford their little prissy pity party right now.

I don’t see how anyone in their right mind can sit out this election OR could in any serious way consider voting GOP.  Who gives a shit if you think your democratic critters in office hasn’t done enough for you…look at the fucking alternative people - this current crop of GOP bastards not only won’t do anything for you, but they intentionally want to do you harm.

So your choices are either vote for the bumbling craven dude who at least is trying to build a house for you, but isn’t doing it as quickly or as competently as you like… or to go with the psychopath who wants to burn it down…and if there is nothing standing for them to burn, then they’ll just poison the ground underneath you and then blow it up from underneath you for good measure.

So your choices are either vote for the bumbling craven dude

I see you’re familiar with the Illinois ballot this time out. ;)

And the other part that kills me? It’s a fucking VOTE. Chances are you can mail it in—postage paid. You don’t even have to put on pants and go to the polls if that’s too much of a damn imposition. Lordy, considering that black people got their skulls busted in and women went through force-feedings to win their franchise, manning up and voting for somebody who doesn’t exactly thrill you is hardly that big a fucking deal.

I mean - isn’t most of life choosing between things that don’t exactly thrill us but tend to keep us healthier in the long run?

I really wonder if the Take My Vote & Go Home crowd have much of an impact on doodly or squat. The unhappy H. Clinton voters (the most progressive of the progressives [eyeroll]) didn’t do squat and they’ve only gotten weaker as time goes on.

Or go back to the people who swore blue they were going to vote for Nader. I knew a lot of people who said they were going to vote for him just to show “them” (whoever the fuck them is)  not a single one of those idiots voted for him.

Whatever. The Pouty Party can vote for Cthulhu or sit at home with their thumbs up their ass.

They’re a sound and fury, signifying baby needs a nap.

I mean - isn’t most of life choosing between things that don’t exactly thrill us but tend to keep us healthier in the long run?

Well said, Oblomova!  True. True.

I see you’re familiar with the Illinois ballot this time out. ;)

Sadly, that is only one good example that fits the bill…

I still think SC takes the cake.  Evil arrogant demagogue Jim DeMint or clueless (and indicted) simpleton, Alvin Green…

I agree with you totally.  It needs to be said.

That article was so good it should have been written here!  I’m doing my part to now help it go viral.

The Cordoba House house controversy has been ginned up by neo-nazi sympathizers. It can’t be said enough.  Geller divided the the Muslim haters because some of them couldn’t handle extreme groups she is willing to coalesce with.

I really keep hoping that Alvin Greene will turn out to be some kind of elaborate performance-art prank. Of course, I’ve also been hoping that about the Christian right for, oh, 30 years.

LOL!  I hear ya.  Well, there’s lots of truth to that old adage that real life is stranger than fiction.

Yes. Very true.

Lord, don’t we all.

Don’t you guys read Wonkette? Alvin Greene is a Dao master.

And I jjust wanted to share this quote from Tony Kushner that I’ve treasured for years:

Listen, here’s the thing about politics: It’s not an expression of your moral purity and your ethics and your probity and your fond dreams of some utopian future. Progressive people constantly fail to get this.

Fantastic Kushner piece, Hamletta. I’ll be pulling that one out a lot. Thanks for the link.
