Why I Am Abandoning Obama and the Democratic Party Forever

I’ve been doing a lot of queasy soul-searching about this on the heels of Betty’s “Hippie-Punching” post, and while I wish to Christ my brutal self-interrogation had led me to a happier and more committed mental space, it did not. In fact—despite shrill protestations by the part of me that’s been bashing Conservatives since 2002 and was madly emailing Superdelegates at Denver to “ignore the PUMAs”—I am compelled to admit that, in the end, Obama and the Democratic Party have let me down, in ways that make a total Tea Party takeover of Congress and, eventually, the Executive Branch seem not merely essential and instructive, but poetically just.

My reasons are simple:

♦ Despite the fact that Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity told me that Obama was my “Messiah”—a thought that never even remotely entered my head unbidden—he has been no such thing.

♦ Because Obama was a Black Democrat who had more powerfully galvanized Conservative opposition—even to the point of questioning his eligibility as a citizen to run for the office—than any other Dem candidate in history including Hillary, it never occurred to me that he would be audacious enough to recapitulate Bill Clinton’s first-term missteps on DADT and Health Care Reform, thus ensuring an electoral blowback in the midterms.

♦ Notwithstanding the fact that I knew when I voted for him that there was no way out of Iraq and Afghanistan that would not further destabilize Central Asia, enhance Iran’s influence, encourage the collapse of Pakistan, challenge the cohesion of the NATO alliance and invite predictable power-play gambits from India, China and Russia that would totally recast the definitions of “victory” and “defeat,” I am upset that Obama has not brought all the troops home.

♦ Even though constant Conservative harping on Obama’s foreign policy causes hostile governments and allies to question America’s resolve, I am chagrined by the US agreement to sell $60 billion worth of weapons to Iran’s arch-enemy Saudi Arabia, a woman-hating Muslim regime that’s not fond of Israel, and wouldn’t have to be our “friend” at all if America would simply tap the 16 million barrels/day of new oil it doesn’t have, even if you include Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico and the crap that’s trapped in the Bakken Formation.

♦ Ignoring for the moment that Obama’s DOE has dedicated billions of dollars to pilot projects to develop Clean Coal Technologies, Carbon Capture and Storage, Synthetic Fuels from Coal and Biomass, Solar Energy, Wind Power and Enhanced Oil Production from depleted wells, and that half of these initiatives are vehemently opposed by Environmental Groups and Concerned Citizens, I am totally peeved that he hasn’t more aggressively challenged Japanese whaling.

♦ I wish to fuck Obama had let the Banksters and Wall Street go down in flames, since it’s not like they were propping up millions of people’s jobs, mortgages and life savings.

♦ The Stimulus Package was a joke, because the $800 billion injected into the US economy was probably entirely spent on Cheez-Whiz and lottery tickets.

♦ I can’t believe he saved the US auto industry, because nobody cares about US cars or the people who make them.

♦ Let’s get real: Government jobs are not “jobs,” because the Americans who do them aren’t really “Americans,” and the functions they perform are useless. Government workers don’t eat, spend money, own homes or pay taxes…and who the fuck really cares about weather forecasts, safe airplanes, non-toxic food, autism or getting their Social Security checks on-time?

♦ Most of all, I resent this Administration’s hard-line stance on Executive Privilege, National Security, assassinations and extra-legal actions to thwart terror because I know in my heart that President Palin and Speaker Boehner would quash that shit in a heartbeat.

♦ PS: Why would Obama not make Gay Marriage and Abortion the centerpiece of his agenda going into a November election where the Dems stand to lose the House and possibly the Senate to Extreme Social Conservatives?

God, what a fool I was. I coulda had McCain. StrangeAppar8us over and out. From now on, I’m blogging for Angle and O’Donnell.

Are you saying that because he is the lesser of two evils that we aren’t allowed to criticize the things that are being done in his name that we believe are wrong?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot.  I don’t want to help any of the Right have any more power, but does that mean I have to accept everything he does with a smile and polite clapping? Is that how dire our political situation is?  I have to assume my guy is 100% right because the other team is so heinous?

*snork* good one Strange.  Perhaps some people will see themselves in that mirror you are holding up.

I genuinely cannot decide which side of this I am to come down on.

You complete me, Strange.

@t4toby—Hell, no. We have to keep beating on them at every turn. However, I’m inclined to hang fire until the second week of November.

Criticism from the left at this point is counterproductive.

Dammit.  That’s so… reasonable.

I’m a Liberal!  I demand that my feelings be acknowledged, nay, gratified or I will set the boat on fire!!!1!

Then it don’t matter. I’ll be all around in the dark - I’ll be everywhere. Wherever you can look - wherever there’s a self-important media wannabe being mildly criticized, so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there, whinging. Wherever there’s an unattributed quote in the WaPo about something nobody cares about, I’ll be there saying they’ve lost the base. I’ll be in the way bloggers yell when they’re mad. I’ll be in the way FDL smears when they’re bitter and they know Grover’s ready, and when the people are readin’ the b.s in the blogs they write - I’ll be there, too.

Don’t forget whenever there’s a cop beatin’ a guy, and when the people are eatin’ the stuff they raise and livin’ in the houses they build.

God Bless You, Tom Joad Rootless!

The serious answer to this is that there is a difference between criticism and bitter vitriol. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, for example, has never wavered in her criticism of the Afghanistan policy, but she’s not making stupid ugly cracks that reinforce republican narratives. If people have to phrase criticisms in a destructive and frankly confused way, like many self-proclaimed “progressive” bloggers do, then maybe they should just be silent until they can learn how to express themselves better.

Aren’t you supposed to say that you didn’t abandon the party, the party abandoned you?

I motion that Strange become everyone’s dad, immediately.

What? That’s not weird.  It’s not.

Thank you, Mike. And I promise I will try to be more like John Schneider than Jor-El!

The serious answer to this is that there is a difference between criticism and bitter vitriol.

Ah-yup. And if you find yourself saying “Well, it’s obvious Obama was never serious about healthcare reform/clean energy/financial regulation, etc., etc.”—ask yourself this series of simple questions:

1) Why the FUCK would he have expended the time and capital he did to get shit through if he wasn’t serious about it? Emanuel and Biden both told him to back down on HCR, maybe go for something more “school-uniformish,” such as an expansion of S-CHIP. He didn’t do it.

2) If healthcare reform and FinReg were such giveaways to the insurance companies and banks—why were the insurance and banking lobbies expending so much time and energy to defeat them? Is it because they didn’t WANT that dirty DINO handout money? Please.

3) What strategy would you suggest to pass more progressive legislation, given the fact that the Dem coalition of necessity includes fuckstains such as Lieberman, Landrieu, Nelson, and Lincoln? (Hint: “bully pulpit” isn’t a strategy.)

4) If Obama doesn’t meet your fine standards for progressive purity, which former president does?

And again I say—if your answer includes the letters “FDR” or “LBJ,” you slept through history class. Neither of them even attempted to introduce legislation for universal healthcare, one of them tossed thousands of innocent Americans into prison camps based on race and ethnicity, and the other expanded the war in Vietnam. Also note that neither of them inherited the perfect shitstorm of a bad economy, two wars, a fucked-up Middle East, and global environmental crises that Obama has had to contend with.

Oh, and they were both, you know, white dudes.

That said: I too want to call Strange “Daddy.” And Rootless, your Joad spoof was the perfect capper to a day of walking a precinct for the Dems.

If healthcare reform and FinReg were such giveaways to the insurance companies and banks—why were the insurance and banking lobbies expending so much time and energy to defeat them?

Shut the fuck up, please. Your questions are ridiculous…because Oblowme is such an obvious corporate tool. The GOP is only pretending to run against him, because he’s doing just what they want him to do, but then they can blame him for doing it.

Don’t you get it? George Soros is funding chastity!

And I promise I will try to be more like John Schneider than Jor-El!

Screw that, I want to be on the first crystal off this planet.

That was last season, Tom. You missed the only cheduled flight of Kandfor Air.

LOOK—THE SUIT. THE BLUE RED AND YELLOW SUIT!

StrangeAppar8us - i swear that would get recs on dailykos, and not for satire either.

Took you long enough, you sell out!

i swear that would get recs on dailykos,

You’ll never get me to believe that anybody ever reads diaries or comments there. The front pagers are typically sane, even if I sometimes disagree with them.  I occasionally scan the titles of diaries and I can’t believe that it’s not just a hangout for writers from The Onion.

I am NOT a sell-out. I was 100% invested in Hillary until her people did all that racist shit.

Only then did I totally pull the plug on her at Denver, from my laptop.

You’ll never get me to believe that anybody ever reads diaries

I’ve never looked at a Kos diary that wasn’t years old by the time I got there. Not that they all suck or anything, but I’m amazed at the Wingnuts who mine the diaries and comments for some obscure poster they can paint as The Voice of the Liberal Left.

By the way folks, that is a photo of Strange.

So? Like you don’t have a baby bonnet and footies.

Hey, if anybody is interested, I found some actual video footage of the Axelrove conference call!

Oblo: nice.  “Pretty please with sugar on top. Clean the fucking car.” Oh, for the days when the lefty blogosphere reads more like Pulp Fiction and less like Waiting for Guffman.

No wonder I can’t get any George Soro money—oh, well, I always felt it was better to be chased than to be chaste, anyway.

For one, I’m glad that this thread can exist without the insertion of an equus ferrus caballus, whether allegedly promised upon settlement or provided as a lagniappe to the regular customer. Not that I am opposed to any equines, per se. Oh no!

But anyhow, I, too, am shocked that the president hasn’t delivered on the things he actually didn’t run on, and instead concentrated on the things he did and also felt were politically possible. This is so unlike politicians generally, and ones I vote for particularly, that I am shocked—shocked! And will probably nap a little. Maybe with a nice tequila beverage.

This is so unlike politicians generally, and ones I vote for particularly, that I am shocked—shocked!

Oh, I know! It’s been awful.

I’ve clutched my string of pearls until it broke and good swooning couches are so hard to find. But personally, I was finished with Obama the minute I realized he wasn’t going to keep his campaign non-promise to give me a pony for every day of the week.

Every day of the week! I heard it was on the monthly, and now I actually will cry bitter tears of disappointment and the like!

And I’m thinking the champagne fountain and Olympic swimming pool of gold are also chimeric?

Damn.  The Bush Years Spoiled me.

And I’m thinking the champagne fountain and Olympic swimming pool of gold are also chimeric?

Alas, like our innocence and trust in America, Obama sold the ponies, the fountains, the pools and the flying cars (for when the ponies are tired) to fund his secret war on the dark side of the moon.

The Bush Years Spoiled me.

OK, this made me laugh. And there’s nothing to laugh about! Oh, the guilt!

Will you people kindly keep the snide sniffy snarkiness down? Go ahead and make your little jokes; it will come back on you like an all-broccoli dinner, this mockery thing of yours!!1!!

Why don’t you go ahead and see if you can get banned from some of these here supposed lefty blogs the way I have? Now that’s a solid accomplishment! What have you to show, huh?

Just asking.

Please hurt me.

Oh, I got the promised pony all right but I never expected it to be so small.  Where’s the Clydesdale I was waiting for?  What a letdown!

I’d be guilty also, too, you betcha. But I know the good times under Bush could never last!  Especially since I am allegedly working class and have to supposedly work.  This is the great failure of this movement. Rove should have at least preserved my indolence, instead of guaranteeing my activism….

gRR. I donate to HRC and all, now…I even blog…..curse them for preying upon my ethics.

Getting banned from the lefty blogs is apparently the EmoGressive version of the Edward Pettus Bridge. Only without all that yucky blood stuff.

And the Edmund Pettus Bridge, too! (I blame the roofies Kevin slipped into the hippie-punching thread earlier.)

I love this thread so much. It is quintessential rumpery.

the image is pure genius.
