Wingnuts rush to defend al Qaeda from accusations of racism
No, really. Obama gave an interview to the South African Broadcasting Corporation and mentioned that not only are al Qaeda members evil terrorists who target innocent people, they’re also racist fucks who don’t give a shit about African lives.
Given that he was speaking to an African media outlet about a recent deadly bombing in Africa, a continent on which Al Qaeda recruits the disaffected, I thought it kinda made sense for Obama to slam al Qaeda for not only being evil killers of the innocent but racist creeps to boot. And there’s a good bit of evidence that they are, in fact, racists.
However, right-wingers are exquisitely sensitive to accusations of racism these days. It could be because the rebranded GOP base, “tea partiers,” have come under high-profile fire for stuff like brandishing signs with the word “niggar” [sic], shouting that epithet at African American congressmen, portraying the president with a bone through his nose, etc.
But it turns out that, to the teabag-types, accusing even al Qaeda of racism is “playing the race card” and thus worse than suicide bombing Baby Jeebus.
At first I thought this odd line of thought was confined to the cranks commenting under the ABC report. Here’s a representative sample:
This president this administration feels everything is race based and it is getting old. The racist cry may work here in the USA because that trap has been laid and nurtured for years. The fact is terrorists are just that people that use terror because they don’t have a massive army or military to push their agenda.

What Obama is trying to get Al Qaeda to do is to target whites instead? Isn’t that racist!?!?
I know, I know—this is nut-picking. But the meme was soon taken up by so-called respectable wingnut media outlets, including NRO and Commentary.
And god help us, Jonah Goldberg—Jonah Goldberg!—is the voice of reason:
I have no idea if focusing on al-Qaeda’s racism (real or alleged) is well-advised in the African context, but it doesn’t seem absurd to me that a black American president might find it productive to raise the subject — in Africa.
Naturally, his fellow Cornerites pounced. The rest of the mouth-breather chorus will be braying about this tomorrow.
Maybe Obama really is the Anti-Christ; it’s not inconceivable that he could convert right-wingers into Satan worshipers. All he has to do is denounce the devil for racism.
