Wire’s “Outdoor Miner” on Ukulele

I love Wire,  I love ukulele masters Gus & Finn, I really love the album Chairs Missing (which has been on heavy rotation since I “rediscovered” it a few months ago), I love this song, and I really love Gus & Finn’s version of it.  Yes, that’s a whole lotta love.

FOR DISCUSSION IN COMMENTS: What album(s) have you “redicovered” lately?  They can either be releases you didn’t care for when they first came out or albums you just kind of lost track of with time.

Here’s some outtakes from the Gugug HQ featuring Gus & Finn and yet another knockout version of “Outdoor Miner”:

recent rediscovery, Neutral Milk Hotel “In the aeroplane over the sea.”

Okay, I’ll get this going.

Lost track of:
Bob Dylan & the Band—Planet Waves (one of the most underrated albums ever—certainly Dylan’s most underrated)
Warren Zevon—Excitable Boy
Rahsaan Roland Kirk—a bunch of stuff

Didn’t like too much, now do:
Replacements—Pleased to Meet Me
Black Sabbath—early stuff (still not crazy about later stuff)
Big Dipper—Craps

For some insane reason, never listened to until last year:
The Monks—Black Monk Time (one of the best albums ever)

recent rediscovery, Neutral Milk Hotel “In the aeroplane over the sea.”

A great album.  When I was just out west I visited my pal Matt in San Diego and that’s his #1 album of all-time.

I’ve recently rediscovered Spirit’s “12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus,” which was released in 1970. I vaguely remember my hippie mom playing the album throughout my childhood—she was a big fan. But I had forgotten all about it until a local community radio station played part of it recently. The whole album is good, which is a rare thing.

I am so jealous of folks like you.  My dad had pretty much zero interest in music and my mom listened to Sergio Franchi.

Chris’ folks, on the other hand, turned her onto Randy Newman and Tom Waits.

Betty, I actually forgot I owned that Spirit album.  I’m two songs into it and really enjoying it so far.  Thanks for the reminder.

I can’t rightly rediscover, if I’m still listening to that same crap from 20+ years ago….

Semi-rediscovered:
“Bakesale” by Sebadoh(thanks to Ham Steak)

They Might Be Giants early albums.  I got back into them after buying their more recent kids’ CDs for my son which reminded me of what great songwriters they are.  Anyone who has kids in their life and wants to be sure that they’ll grow up to be music snobs would be well advised to buy them or download a few of the better songs. I think it’s working on my son.  He thinks the easy songs on Guitar hero suck because he’s just not feeling the lyrics.

Fake Believe

Flying V

Can You Find it?

Why Does the Sun Shine?

Fibber Island

Where Do They Make Balloons? (My favorite)

Sleepwalkers (No, wait, this is my favorite)

Glad you’re enjoying it. You must have a vast collection if you forgot you owned the album. Do you have as many albums as McCain has houses or something? ;-)

I’m with you on Wire. Even on ukulele.  And don’t get me started on Planet Waves.

I’m going through a Magazine phase.  Also Robyn Hitchcock, whose reissue barrel is being scraped for the 4th time.

Dylan and The Band- Basement Tapes. Found the cd behind some books, Just awesome.
Elizabeth Cotton- Shake Sugaree
Jerry Garcia- all the studio albums. Didn’t really listen to them at the time—figured live was his thing. Maybe with age I better appreciate tastiness, craft & restraint.
Duke Ellington- In Orbit
Clark Terry Bob Brookmeyer Quintet- Gingerbread Men. Great musicianship & funny too. Good times.

and Graham Parsons. Esp w Emmy Lou

I’m not so much re-discovering music as I am picking up older material that I’d somewhat dismissed, or seeking out new-to-me artists with deep catalogs and minimal publicity.

Quicksilver Messenger Service
Badly Drawn Boy
Widespread Panic
Nada Surf
The Weakerthans
Gomez

This post did prompt me to scroll through iTunes and clean up some multiple listings and change some tags - that’s always a good thing.

Robin Trower came through town a few months back. Does that count for anything? We have a little place called the Music Mill (scroll down for Trower pics) where he played ... holds about 800, full service bar. Very nice venue.

I have a lot of music (I used to put out a fanzine and got free stuff in the mail all the time). I also still own vinyl, though after growing tired of lugging around albums every time I moved, I’ve paired them down quite a bit.

wrb, Basement Tapes is firmly planted in my top 10 albums of all time.

pop, a childhood friend and I used to listen to one of Trower’s albums a lot, but for the life of me I can’t remember which one it was (even after Googling).

Bridge of Sighs .. no? The remastered re-release is at the link I gave.

By the way, just to date myself, I first had Bridge of Sighs in 8-track tape. I was a sophomore or junior in HS.
