WSJ: Palin Cancels “Major Address” at Iowa TP Event Over “Lying”

Bummer. I was just working on a post about how squirrelly the whole “Tea Party of America” operation appears to be, especially after yesterday’s kerfuffle where they invited, uninvited and then reinvited Conservative punchline Christine O’Donnell.

Now, the WSJ’s Washington Wire reports that Palin is bagging on the event, allegedly over “continual lying” on the part of the event organizers.  (Whoopsie — updated article says Palin is “no longer confirmed.” A subtle distinction.)

Scott Conroy of Real Clear Politics — who follows Palin closely and usually has the inside scoop on these things — confirms that her appearance at the Iowa rally is “on hold,” although Palin still plans to be in Iowa on Saturday. Meanwhile, Shushannah Walshe — Conroy’s co-author on the book Sarah from Alaska — tweets that Tea Party of America organizers have spoken with Palin’s handlers, the event is “go” and they just have to “take care of a couple things.”

C4Pers are predictably in a tizzy, since some had intended to drive or fly cross-country to attend what they hoped would be Palin’s long-teased announcement of a Presidential run, or at least the Gettysburg Address of the 21st Century.

For their sake, I hope the WSJ reporting is correct, since at least the trip wouldn’t be a total wash:

The former governor will now appear at a Friday event in Des Moines sponsored by the group Conservatives4Palin. It is currently scheduled for 8 p.m. at The Machine Shed Restaurant

[UPDATE:]  OK, now we know even less.

[UPDATE:]  For once, Dan Riehl is right.

[UPDATE:]  Looks like Snooki was too proud to share the stage with the Witch of Delaware. It is now safe to say “DIVA!”

It’s *crickets* about all this over at C4P.

Did you check the Open Thread?

How much of this is an effort to drive the variation of “will she or won’t she?” Just for the media attention.  ‘Cause we all know O’Donnell was getting too much press this week.

I’m just torn between whether this is over Christine O’Donnell or the “list of people who will be backstage.”

Twisty straws? Blue M&Ms;? Maybe Sarah should have scoped out these organizers a little more thoroughly.

Did you check the Open Thread?

Aha! Nope. I’ll put down my coffee cup and head there now.

They just have to “take care of a couple of things”?  Like what?  Arranging to have O’Donnell bumped off?

If $arah really does cancel out on this hugely hyped speech (WILL SHE OR WON’T SHE DECLARE!?) even the drooling idiots who still worship the ground she stands on may feel just a leetle disillusioned as they eat their non-refundable plane tickets to Iowa that they bought weeks ago.

Seriously, how could anyone think this immature, thin skinned, brat of a woman can possibly organize and run a national presidential campaign?

All we can do is sit back and root for injuries.

Seriously, how could anyone think this immature, thin skinned, brat of a woman can possibly organize and run a national presidential campaign?

These people want to see her in the White House. Leading the most powerful country on the planet. With access to the launch codes for the really big bombs.

What was your question?

The theory that seems to be emerging at C4P is that Palin is a victim of a Rick Perry dirty trick perpetrated by the bumbling Tea Party of America peeps. Not sure how they square their vision of Palin being hoodwinked by those bumpkins with her ability to manage access to launch codes for really big bombs, but there you have it.

The one good thing about not having power for FOUR DAYS (and counting)? I have been blissfully ignorant of the latest Tea Party/Republican antics—and politics in general. (Am typing this from our public library, where I was able to get online—and, of course, headed over to Rumproast. :-)

@Betty Cracker — Two of the organizers seem to be former Cain operatives in Iowa, and one seems to be an Idaho Patriot who’s just along for the ride, because he doesn’t want an “RFID chip” implanted in his head.

Previously, this was the Des Moines Tea Party, which was a hodge-podge of Lib-hate and birther madness.

How they got “Perry” out of that, I don’t know. But, obviously. SOMEONE is taking advantage of Sarah’s inability to use Google in order to discredit her.

Finally, it dawned on me: The Repub prez campaign is a real-life enactment of Smokin’ Aces, with Obama in the Jeremy Piven role as the one they’re all out to whack.  Who’s Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta?  Still working on that.

Really, it has nothing to do with the fact that Tea Party of America didn’t actually exist until it invited Sarah to their launch event, or that its founders are an odd assortment of ideologues and operatives who started out working for other candidates and own a Web site that barely has a hearbeat. There’s no way these could have been perceived as “red flags” by Sarah, because she trusts “We the People” to do what is right. To paraphrase Bogart in Casablanca, she was misinformed.

I’m still totally confuddled about whether Palin’s in or not. TPM shares my confuddlement, but apparently neither of us is as confuddled as the TPA organizers:

Update, 12:57 PM: According to NBC, Tea Party of America president Ken Crow said “I had to cancel O’Donnell,” and is trying to lure Palin back to the event.

...

It’s easy to see where Palin might get a negative impression of the organizers, however. After initially asking O’Donnell to join the event, Tea Party of America’s top officials split over their reasons for rescinding O’Donnell’s initial invite, with president Ken Crow citing scheduling problems and co-founder Charles Gruschow citing widespread disdain for the former Senate candidate among Tea Party activists. They quickly brought her back into the fold, however, and Crow said they had “panicked” initially in dropping her.

As far as I can decipher, the commenters in the C4P open thread seem to have concluded that Palin’s definitely on for the speech and this is all a distraction by the heinous MSM bent on dragging her down, and the walls of perception with her.

They will obviously all form an invincible team in the election.

Oh, and Palin’s BFF Tammy Bruce is desperately trying to hold the fort, and in the mean time has linked to an “Exclusive! Sneak peak at Obama’s first campaign poster!”, which is just begging for a counter-photoshop.

I love how some of the C4Pers insisted that Sarah would never “hijack” someone else’s event to make her Big Announcement, because she’s an invited guest and has a humble servant’s heart, and not everything is “all about her.”

Now, of course, she appears hell-bent on wrecking the thing because she’s unhappy with backstage arrangements and she doesn’t want O’Donnell on the bill. It’s like Spinal Tap and Stonehenge.

I mean, apparently she has no “team” or spokesperson to manage communications on this.

Just wait until the C4Pers find out that Organizing 4 Palin’s massive nationwide boots-on-the-ground operation is six guys, a megaphone and a letterhead.

This will end well (from the C4P comments):

Nativevoice + [Moderator] 30 seconds ago
It is 1:26 central time, I am listening to Tammy Bruce and I think she is getting ready to call the governor to see what is going on. Will update you!

HotAir claims to have the skinny on the backroom “negotiations”:

Iowa tea-party organizers made three changes at Palin staff’s request

Crow said two of the requests were logistical details: Email a copy of the program today, and address concerns about back-stage security and who will be allowed in that area.

Asked about the third request, Crow said: “Can I let that remain private for now?”

Meanwhile, Crow telephoned staff for O’Donnell, a Delaware Republican who ran for the U.S. Senate, to say she can’t speak at Saturday’s event.

“We’re all friends and she’s not coming,” he said, referring to O’Donnell.

Maybe we could start a pool on what that third request was.

The HotAir commenters have a head start:

Silly. We all know what the 3rd request is. She wants bendy straws.

I freaking love this, because it implies that Parry/Perry is really an agent of the Kenyan Usurper.

“Four more years! Four more years!” Hoverrounds for all, and all the gummint cheese you can eat.

Maybe we could start a pool on what that third request was.

Build a bridge out of her?

HeyTammyBruce Tammy Bruce
Game on! CONFIRMING Sarah Palin will be at Iowa Rally. #teaparty #tbrs
3 minutes ago

Seems to be confirmed by Scott Conroy of realClearPolitics.

Yeah, bendy straws was my first thought too.

Citing “sources close to the Palin campaign”, C4Pers should be encouraged to mobilize and get to Iowa with promises of free lodging and booze once they register there.

@YAFB: Ask, and ye shall receive.

Suggestion window is open, incidentally. ;o}

I mean, apparently she has no “team” or spokesperson to manage communications on this.

Sounds like she could use a community organizer on staff.

So, it was all about the Blue M&Ms; and crushing a female Conservative she once endorsed. Oh, and proving this is HER fucking event, not the organizers’.

She’s a regular frikkin’ Gandhi, ain’t she?

This is weird:

Tea Party of Amer confirms Palin will speak but also tells a strange tale of the back + forth w COD + Peter Singleton speaking for the gov

Peter Singleton is the sole known Organizer 4 Palin in Iowa, and is not officially tied to her or her campaign. This is strange, clubby, improvisational stuff, without a hint of a campaign team. I’ve seen Prom Floats that had better organization.

Oh, and I guess it’s almost compulsory for one of us to type SHADES OF THE PUMA CONVENTION!

Can’t wait for O’Donnell to chime in about this.  Or will she tow the Tea Party line?

Well, anyway, Palin is going to speak on behalf of a nonexistent Iowa Tea Party group her “team” has accused of “continuous lying,” and which the C4Pers have written off as incompetent saboteurs hired by Perry and the MSM.

I think this event has been pretty well poisoned.

Can’t wait for O’Donnell to chime in about this.  Or will she tow the Tea Party line?

What sayeth Wiccapedia?

I’m all excited to see her again. I miss the quasi-innocent wackiness, not to mention my continued thanks for assuring that Senate seat remained Democratic. The Jon Stewart/Bill Maher fodder was just a sweet bonus.

Say what you will about O’Donnell — she never sold out her ideals like Sarah Palin. COD was in the fight till the end. ;->

Maybe we could start a pool on what that third request was.

She wants her share of the grift delivered in a paper bag full of small denomination bills so she can keep it off the books.

I was such a fool to doubt her:

Sarah Palin would never, ever back out of this speech knowing Thousands of her barbarians and hobbits were either on their way or soon to be on their way to Iowa.

@YAFB: Ask, and ye shall receive.

Suggestion window is open, incidentally. ;o}

Why, thankee, Mrs. P!

Looks like Snooki was too proud to share the stage with the Witch of Delaware.

Wait, now they’ve cancelled O’Donnell a second time?  Yes, comparisons to the PUMA convention are very apt.

Ask, and ye shall receive.

Ha, that’s perfect!

Tonya & Nancy. Sarah & Christine.

Yeah, this is starting to look like when Amy Siskind kicked Harriet Christian out of the “New Agenda” for saying out loud what they were all whispering.

I keep picturing Palin telling O’Donnell to stop trying to make “fetch” happen.
